The term “acf” will likely remain contradictory and ambivalent given the heterogeneity in Asian-ness as a lived reality. Any attempt to fix definitions of Chineseness, specifically, or Asian-ness, more broadly, through objective racial, national, or ethnic criteria, and to impose it as a category of state regulation must be resisted because to go down that road is to go the way of endless arguments over authority, authenticity, and voice, and ultimately reproduces race consciousness and racism.
