One proven way to market your successes is to sell the positive results of a pilot initiative. In other words, instead of saying, "I've been reading about how important succession planning is, and I think our company ought to try something in this area," find a department experiencing pain in the area of succession and create a pilot project with them. Make sure that the project's results are applicable to a broad audience. Then, sell their positive results to other organizational departments. Although there is some good logic behind this fee—managers will be motivated to release their employee so that the department doesn't incur a charge, no-shows don't take spots away from others in popular classes, and your department doesn't incur the costs of an additional participant—this is actually a fee for "nonservice" and has a significant downside. That is, to avoid the no-show fee, managers will often send someone else in the place of the previously registered employee who is unable to attend.

Additionally, it's not any fun for the marketer, and it doesn't yield great results. The best way for a provider of training and development products or services to market is to build relationships. When providers have strong relationships with clients, clients want to hire providers when the right opportunity comes along. And it's not just external consultants who have clients. As internals read this chapter, keep in mind that, unless you aren't accountable to anyone organizationally, you, too, have to build these types of relationships.
