A biological environment of special importance in Tasmania is provided by freshwater lakes (see also chapter III). There are something of the order of 5,000 of these in the island mainly but not entirely due to the incidence of glaciation and it seems possible to divide them from an age point of view into four broad groups. First there are the preglacial lakes, the origins of which are generally difficult to determine because of their greater age and more complex history. Chief among these are the large lakes of the eastern Central Plateau - the Great Lake, Arthurs Lakes, Lakes Sorell, Crescent and Echo.
