On the first reading, Fish’s view represents a moderate advance on expressive realism, to the degree that it challenges the belief that meaning inheres timelessly in the text as an expression of the author’s ideas.

If we are not happy with the constraints a group imposes, not at home in that practice of reading, we are free to join another. Indeed, we are already by definition members of another, since there is no interpretation in isolation from culturally imposed assumptions and expectations, no direct and solitary encounter with ‘the text itself’. The welcome inclusion of culture in Fish’s account of the reading process led, however, to a problem of a different kind, and in 1989 in Doing What Comes Naturally Fish addressed the question, among others, of change.
