Franz Boas, the leader of the American Historical School of Anthropology was openly critical of the evolutionary approach of Sumner and Keller. He held that anthropologists should collect their own data; fieldwork should be the hallmark of the professional anthropologist; and that historical reconstruction of particular cultures rather than grand evolutionary schemes should be the basis of ethnology.
