Continuing improvements are leading to devices of smaller size, lower weight, and extended battery life. Second, the wireless communications networks are improving in connectivity, capacity, and security. Examples of wireless communication technologies include General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), a packet-based wireless communication service that provides continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users, and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), a set of communication protocols to standardize how wireless devices can be used for Internet access.

It was designed before local area networks (LANs) existed, but has accommodated that new network technology, as well as the more recent Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and frame switched services. It was envisioned as supporting a range of functions from file sharing and remote login to resource sharing and collaboration, and has spawned electronic mail and more recently the World Wide Web.
